TUTOR's INTERVIEW

1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

When I was in my teens. I always knew what I wanted in life and that was Chartered Accountancy. I belong to the family of educators. My mum, uncle and aunties they all are teachers and so was my grand-father. When I finished my studies I really wanted to do something with the acquired knowledge and my passion for helping others naturally took me to tutoring.

My first tutee was from KPMG. I still remember it was Saturday and I got there early morning to do a couple of hours. He liked my teaching style so much that he asked if I could teach him the next day too. After assisting him for total 16 hours Sat/Sun, this whole new journey started from that point. After that weekend he became my permanent student until his case study.

Since then, I started accumulating tutees and never looked back

2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My Financial Reporting and Audit Assurance teachers in Kaplan Financial. Truly decent human beings and a genuine inspiration. They had real interest in for what they taught and were always available for any query we had. I have the same attitude towards my students keeping myself available 24/7 for them and take pride in what I teach and practice.

4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

As five fingers are not the same, every single tutee is different therefore adjusting as per to their needs is one of the most important traits a good tutor must have. Ability to listen, being patient not only in the beginning but throughout the engagement, adaptable to the constant changes and making concepts as easy as possible. Ability to convey complex terms and calculations into simplest form. Reviewing progress and making any necessary changes to ensure tutee is performing at his/her best.

5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I helped one of the classmates while undertaking my qualification. He was really struggling and was thinking of opting out as he couldn’t take the pressure of exams. When I heard he was planning exit strategy, I sat down with him and listened to why he decided to quit. I’d say it was my first encounter to real life challenge of which I had clear solution to. Not only I helped him with his exams but also made him realize the perks of being a Chartered Accountant. I was persuasive enough to change his mind. He passed all his exams and is now an active member of ACCA.

6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Financial Reporting standards are getting revised constantly to address latest issues when applying the treatments. Tax rules are changing each year to improve fiscal policy on which our Government is heavily relied. Therefore keeping myself afresh with this could be a challenge but enjoyable. This enables me to continuously assess how our economy is progressing.

7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Because my passion is teaching/helping, I am in this profession. My work gets me out of bed each morning. Before my alarm clock goes off, I am off bed looking forward to the day thinking what differences I’d make today, bring positive changes and make someone’s life better. Can’t think of doing anything else but this even if I get another life.

8) What makes you a Brilliant Tutor (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

Having taught thousands of students successfully since I started in 2008, I have formed an unattachable desire to keep my legacy alive. My secret of success is common sense and that common sense is “whatever I say, I just do it”. Whatever I commit, I deliver. I don’t believe in cancellations, take my work very seriously and am super focused on results. I tend to know my students, their parents, their friends, I am actually part of their lives. Because I know them, I can better understand their problems and solve them as they arise.
Collection of this makes me a real ‘Brilliant Tutor” and I love it to bits.
