Asthma ClinicAsthma is a common, lifelong condition that affects the airways - the small tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. Various triggers, such as environmental conditions, cause the airways to become narrower and irritated - making it difficult to breath and leading to symptoms of asthma. There are over five million people with asthma in the UK.
The severity of asthma varies considerably, both in children and adults. Many have mild asthma with only occasional problems, whilst others sometimes require hospital admission to control severe attacks.
Although there is no cure for asthma, a combination of the correct treatment from our asthma nurses and good self-management will enable most people to control their asthma so that it doesn't interfere with daily life.
There are many positive role models who have achieved great things while also having asthma, such as Paula Radcliffe, David Beckham and Stephen Fry.
No other medical intervention has done more to save lives and improve quality of life than vaccination. Thanks to the NHS and its childhood vaccination programme, children in the UK are now protected against many dangerous diseases.
it’s easy to underestimate the importance of children’s vaccinations but to illustrate their importance, it is worth nothing that after a scare about the safety of the whooping cough vaccine in the 1970s and 80s, parents stopped vaccinating their children against the disease. This led to three epidemics, and at least 100 children died after catching the disease.
For a small outlay of time, this simple, free measure is one of the best things you can do to ensure your child's health.
The practice adheres to the NHS immunisation schedule, outlined in detail elsewhere on the NHS website. In summary, your child needs immunisations at:
8 weeks
12 weeks
16 weeks
Between 12 and 13 months
3 years and 4 months, or soon after (MMR; Pre-school booster)
COPD stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is the name used to describe a number of conditions, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, where people have difficulty breathing because of long-term damage to their lungs. The main symptom of COPD is an inability to breathe in and out properly. This is also referred to as airflow obstruction.
The biggest single cause of COPD is cigarette smoking. Typically, COPD affects people over the age of 35 who are, or who have been, heavy smokers.
If you are breathless when exercising or moving around, have had a cough for a long time (with or without phlegm), if you wheeze, feel chesty or have bronchitis, then it may be that you have COPD. The practice nurse can assess how well you breathe by using a machine called a spirometer. This will allow diagnosis of COPD.
Phlebotomy - Blood tests
Our healthcare assistant can take blood samples on site. These tests take place in the morning. The samples are collected by courier and delivered to Croydon University Hospital. The results are received electronically and assessed by the GP.
Primary care counselling service - CounsellingCounselling provides an opportunity for those in distress to explore their feelings and to discuss difficulties and problems with a qualified professional who is able to listen without judgement and take an objective view of things in a safe environment.
Just talking to someone confidentially who is not a friend or family member can make all the difference. A counsellor can work together with you to develop better ways of coping, allowing you to live the life you deserve.
We provide a free counselling service to women and men of all racial, cultural and religious groups irrespective of sexual orientation, marital status or age at our branch practice, Headley Drive Surgery, less than 15 minutes' walk away. Our counsellors can provide support and treatment for a wide range of mental health and emotional issues including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relationship issues, and bereavement.
Please book an appointment with the GP to be referred.
This service requires a referral by your GP
Smoking cessation clinicThrough our health care assistants, we provide the means to help you in your goal of quitting smoking. Smoking remains the single biggest cause of premature death and preventable disease in the UK.
