Services
Anticoagulant monitoring and dosing - provided in-houseThe anti-coagulation monitoring clinic is run by appointment on a Tuesday morning by Sister Sue. This appointment will take approximately 10 minutes and blood is taken by fingerprick and analysed immediately on our 'near patient testing' monitor.
If you are unable to attend clinic on Tuesdays or have special requirements, other arrangements can be made via reception.
Marevan (formerly Warfarin) is a medication prescribed for a variety of conditions- for example atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat) and deep vein thrombosis. It requires regular monitoring as the required dose can vary from person to person. Details of this can be found here
The Practice is now able to diagnose and treat patients with deep vein thrombosis using blood testing equipment in surgery and our ultrasound scanner, allowing immediate treatment to be administered close to home.
The skin Clinic is held on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning. The clinic is run by Dr Maidment and he will often have one of the registrars with him.
Dr Maidment has a long experience in Dermatology and has gained the Diploma in Dermatology at Cardiff University in 2010.
We often review common dermatatolgy problems that have been identified by other medical members of the practice and most patients are referred directly to see Dr Maidment.
Remember the features of a mole that mayraise concern are :
Pigment (dark areas) that are irregular.
Border that is irregular
Larger moles – more than 7 mm in diameter.
Recent increase in size
Recent change in pigment.
Bleeding and ulceration.
The joint injections service operates weekly and is for patients of Bilbrook Medical Centre only, following a referral by their GP.
It is often used to relieve inflammation of certain areas of the body, particularly joints. In addition, injections are sometimes used to treat:
Tendinitis (such as tennis elbow)
Bursitis (such as housemaids knee)
Injections are invasive procedures and we would therefore ask that you complete a consent form, prior to any procedure- it is important that you do ask your doctor if you have any concerns or questions, no matter how trivial you might consider them.
If you feel that this service might help you, please consult your GP.
Minor surgery (e.g. removal of moles and skin lesions) - provided in-house
The minor surgery service is run weekly at the surgery and is available only for patients registered with the Practice.
We are happy to remove skin lesions that are troublesome or suspicious following an assessment and recommendation by the GP.
Procedures are undertaken by one of our GPs, often involve local anaesthetic and take between 5 and 30 minutes to complete. Sometimes you might require stitches to assist the wound to heal.
It is sometimes advisable to take some time away from work to assist your recovery, especially if you have a particularly active job.
Some of the things we encounter include:
Moles
Skin growths
Cysts
Skin tags
Warts
If you feel that you might benefit from this service, please see your GP.
Wound aftercare
Wounds should be kept clean and dry.
Stitches should be removed after 1 week unless otherwise specified.
Simple dressings without stitches are usually removed after 24 hours unless otherwise specified
Phlebotomy
Blood tests are performed on Monday, Tuesday and Alternate Friday mornings by our phlebotomist. If your blood test is a 'fasting' test, please do not have anything to eat or drink, other than water, on the morning of your test.
If you require a blood test as part of the ongoing monitoring of your health, as recommended by a doctor or nurse, please have a word with reception who will be happy to help.
Blood tests are commonly performed in order to make a diagnosis but we appreciate that not everyone feels comfortable with them- if you have any concerns, please let us know so that we can try and accomodate your needs.
Importantly, we ask that if you have had a test of any nature, you telephone reception after 11.30 a.m., from 1 week following the test, to ask for the result.
The practice runs runs a successful clinic on most mornings with Hayley, the Health Care Assistant to help registered patients quit smoking.
You can book this service by having a word with reception.
We run a comprehensive travel health service for our patients under the guidance of Sister Heidi, who has a wealth of experience in this area. We are able to give general advice, destination specific vaccination advice as well as prescriptions and vaccinations where appropriate.
It can sometimes be difficult to know which vaccinations are needed when you travel abroad- simply click on the relevant section of this map to check what the recommendations for your destination.
If you wish to book an appointment, which are usually 20 minutes in length, with our travel health service, please telephone reception. Please note that some vaccinations incur a charge and our reception staff will be happy to help you with any enquiry regarding this also.
The Practice is proud to be a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, meaning that the Yellow Fever Vaccination (YFV) and certificate can be obtained from us. This service is available to registered patients.
