We know that the one thing that sets us apart from other independent providers and enables us to deliver exceptional care is the dedication, professionalism and compassion of our teams. The people we recruit are special; we’re not just looking for qualifications, but a passion for delivering the best possible care.  

We provide our teams with ongoing training and personal development programmes to provide them with the skills and confidence to deliver great care.

Individuals working in our care homes also have an intensive induction process, lasting 12 weeks and meeting Common Induction Standards as set out by the Care Standards Act. We use a mixture of e-learning and face to face tuition to train people in various aspects of providing care.

We have also developed an innovative training programme in which teams spend a day experiencing first-hand what it is like to live with dementia. Participants wear gloves, goggles and earphones which simulate the effects of ageing and are taken through a range of activities designed to simulate the impact of dementia. Many of our team members have experienced true eureka moments during this training as they better appreciate the challenges many of our clients face and recognise the importance of their role as care and support workers.

Siew Batten

Home manager

Siew Batten has more than 20 years experience and became manager of Highbury New Park in 2008. She tells us in her own words what good care means to her. For me, providing high quality care is about taking a personalised approach, which means getting to know each resident as a person, understanding their lifetime experiences and finding out about their likes and dislikes. It’s about respecting their dignity. Everyone in our team is very professional but also very friendly – people often comment about the welcoming and homely atmosphere we have here. The most rewarding thing about my job is seeing residents happy and relaxed. Getting positive feedback from residents and their relatives about the care we provide is a fantastic feeling. Outside of work I enjoy going to the theatre, relaxing with a good book and doing a spot of gardening. We have a lovely garden here at Highbury New Park and it’s always nice to see residents helping out to keep it looking nice. We welcome family members any time they want to visit and we often put on special events that residents can invite their loved ones along to. One event that stands out for me was our ‘Indian day’, when the members of our team who have Indian backgrounds wore traditional dress, organised a wonderful meal and put on some lively dances for us to enjoy. It was great to experience something so different and everyone had a really fun time.
